Combination Lock Singapore
How Combination Locks Work
Combination locks use a sequence of numbers or symbols to unlock. You can enter the sequence of symbols or numbers using a rotating dial that interacts with several discs or cams. Some combination locks have multiple rotating discs that directly interact with the lock. Combination lock devices don’t use key to open.
How the combination lock works
The combination locks normally use a wheel pack. The wheel pack is a set of wheels that work together to match the lock combination and open the lock. The combination dial is the face of the lock that you see from the outside. This dial is attached to a spindle inside the lock which runs through several wheels and the drive cam, which has a drive pin attached to it. The number of wheels in a wheel pack normally depends on how many numbers or symbols there are in the combination since each wheel represents a symbol or number.
When opening the lock, you need to turn the dial to the correct symbol or number position. The spindle wills in turn the drive cam until the drive pin makes contact with the wheel fly on the adjacent wheel. In order for the lock to open, you need to continue turning the dial until all the wheels are spinning and their notches line up perfectly at the right combination.
There is also another small metal bar attached to the lever or the lock called the fence. In case the right combination has not been dialed, the fence prevents the lock from opening by blocking the path of the bolt that secures the lock. However, with the right combination, the fence calls into the space created by the notches allowing the bolt to pass through and open the lock.
Some of the types of combination locks include:
This is a simple type of a combination lock. It is often used in low security cases such as bicycle locks and briefcases. Multi dial locks are considered the least secure and easy to crack. That is why they are used in such simple application because you can open the lock without knowing the correct combination.
Combination locks for lockers, safes or padlocks may use a single dial that interacts with various parallel cams in the lock. You can open the lock by rotating the dial clockwise to the first number or symbol and counterclockwise to the next until you complete the combination. The cams have notches that align on the correct combination to open the lock.
Multi dial locks are less secure than single locks. However, combination locks with single dials are easy to hack into in case two or more digit follow each other in the correct sequence.
Advantages of combination locks
If you create your own complicated combination that is difficult to tamper with, it makes it harder for someone to be able to open the high tech lock. It’s now advised that you get a new combo every few months to reduce the chances of being hacked into. Combination locks are top notch and don’t ever require you to keep any keys; all you need is to master the combination, which you will find quite easy to memorize with time. Combination locks are great with safes, home door, lockers and bicycle locks, among others especially when put in place by a pro.
